Kadannappally-Panapuzha Grama Panchayat is located in Taliparamba Block of Payyanur Taluk in Kannur District, Kerala. Spread across the villages of Kadannappally and Panapuzha, the Panchayat covers an area of 53.75 square kilometres.
The Panchayat is bordered by Eramam-Kuttoor Grama Panchayat to the north, Chapparapadavu and Pariyaram Grama Panchayats to the east, Cheruthazham Grama Panchayat and Payyanur Municipality to the west, and Cheruthazham Grama Panchayat to the south.
Kadannappally-Panapuzha has a diverse topography characterized by rocky uplands, hill slopes, paddy fields, streams, and riverine plains. The terrain slopes from east to west and can broadly be classified into four geographical zones: rocky uplands, hill slopes, alluvial paddy fields, and riverine plains. Nearly seventy percent of the Panchayat consists of rocky uplands and hill slopes, which are well suited for commercial crops such as rubber, cashew, tapioca, and pepper.
The Panchayat falls within the Northern Midland Agro-Climatic Zone, one of Kerala’s thirteen agro-climatic regions.
Historically, Kadannappally Panchayat was formed in 1954 by combining Kadannappally, separated from Ezhom Village, and Cheruvicheri (Swaroopasree), separated from Kuttoor Village. Panapuzha Panchayat was also formed in 1954 from the Panapuzha area that was separated from Kuttoor Village. The present Kadannappally-Panapuzha Grama Panchayat came into existence on 20 December 1963.
A prominent landmark of the Panchayat is the ancient Vellalath Siva Temple, which is more than a thousand years old and is regarded as one of the eighteen great Shiva temples of India. The temple houses a Jyothirlinga installation, and ancient inscriptions, believed to be over a millennium old and yet to be deciphered, are engraved on the stone steps of the temple pond.
